Why New Recruits Are Leaving

The goal of every company or business when hiring is to find dedicated staff that will commit to the role for the long term. However, this is not always the case. Even though the employer may strive to give the new recruits the best of conditions to make them blend and get moving as soon as possible, sometimes it just doesn’t work. Whether you are dealing with a temporary employee or a permanent one, it pays to know some of the reasons why they are likely to quit before spending some time, and here are a few pointers to help you know why that may be happening.

Higher expectations

It is common for new recruits to get into an organization with very high expectations, only for these expectations not to be met. This normally arises from the perception they had about the company, especially regarding remunerations and the work conditions, as well as what they had anticipated they would be doing. When they finally join and they find discord between what is on the ground and what they had expected, they may lose the motivation to continue working and finally quit. Controlling expectations may be difficult, but a good strategy would be to be very open with them during the hiring process and answer all their questions truthfully and diligently.

Lack of autonomy

Younger employees want freedom and autonomy to schedule their work, and to meet their expectations. Employees will be more satisfied with a flexible work schedule because they are able to balance work with other aspects of their lives. Having a flexible workspace and work hours will increase their performance and engagement.

Unfriendly work environment

You may get the best recruits from the temp agencies, but if you don’t offer a good work environment, then be prepared that they may soon be leaving your organization. Again, if they join the organization and find a large number of disgruntled current staff, this will be a real morale killer and when the mood catches with the new recruits, they are likely to leave. The remedy to this is to offer a good work environment that the new recruits will find welcoming and comfortable enough to make them give their best.

Tight deadlines

Most potential recruits will claim that they can work under minimal supervision and meet very tight deadlines. However, when they are put to the test, they fail miserably. If you bring an employee and take them straight to strict deadline conditions, some may be unable to cope with the pressure and may decide to quit. If this is your kind of work environment, consider giving them proper orientation and allowing them time to adapt before you attempt to let them swim with the sharks.

As a personnel agency, we recommend managers to stay involved with employees and support them. Having career conversations early and often, and asking questions such as “What skills do you need to learn?” is important to understand employees’ goals and ambitions. Making your employees aware of the value of their successes will win both their hearts and minds.
